Published Tue 12 Apr 2022
Table Tennis New South Wales (TTNSW) held its 86th AGM on 26 March 2022 with a massive shout out of thanks to the contributions from all its affiliates and its members.
The 2022 TTNSW Council includes: President - Tony Aduckiewicz, Vice Presidents - Stephen Gillespie and Ted Davis, Secretary - Leonie Whiteford, Finance Director - Ian Finlay, and Directors of Anthony Zhao, Jacky Nguyen, Michael Li, Paul Zhao, Simon Leung, and Vivian Dederko.
President of TTNSW, Tony Aduckiewicz, congratulated the great achievements of TTNSW in 2021, and said: “2021 was a challenging year for the table tennis communities in NSW, Australia and globally, but TTNSW overcame all unforeseen difficulties and barriers and achieved the most success in 2021.”
Tony continued: “2021 was a great year for the NSW table tennis community. I would like to offer sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to our great sport throughout the year.”
Vice President of TTNSW, Ted Davis said: “TTNSW is proud of its great success and achievements while it grew with Australia and served Australia and New South Wales. We wish to thank the TTNSW community for their concerted effort in 2021. We wish to
thank Marie Pinkewich, TTA Board Member, for her tireless work on this annual report and other recording projects.”
Ted continued: “2021 was a great year for TTNSW, and it’s important to review our great success and achievements throughout this challenging year. The highlights of our notable achievements in 2021 include, but are not limited to as following:”
Beginning with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Table Tennis Australia (TTA), which has crystallised a good proportion of our on-going revenue as well as laying out a participation plan for our sport, TTNSW has hit all Government Benchmarks in 2021.
21 April 2021 marked the 50-year anniversary of the 1971 Australian Ping Pong Diplomacy Tour to China, where an Australian table tennis delegation with three TTNSW members Paul Pinkewich, Steve Knapp and Noel Shorter travelled to China for competitions, training, and cultural exchange.
Five icons who made a significant and genuine contribution to New South Wales table tennis were recognized and awarded the 2021 TTA Volunteer Awards on 10 Dec 2021: Joy and Tom Boyd OAMs, Theo Morsink, Stephen Gillespie and Samuel Miller. Tom and Joy Boyd were awarded the TTA 50 years of service award as well as receiving the Order of Australia award for Service to Table Tennis. Theo Morsink received the TTA 25 years of service award, Stephen Gillespie received the TTA official of the year award while Samuel Miller received the TTA young official award.
Two TTNSW athletes Chris Yan and Michelle Bromley officially represented Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Michelle is the first New South Wales born and grown female Olympian in Australian table tennis history. Stephen Gillespie served as the Deputy Referee of 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
TTNSW membership grew strongly in 2021 with the 2241-member mark being surpassed. There are 25 TOPS coaches, 22 Level 1 coaches, 4 Level 2 coaches and 1 Level 3 coach were accredited by TTA in 2021.
After eight TTNSW junior players were selected into the 2021 National Hopes Squad on 10 May 2021, two TTNSW junior players Yangzi Liu and Mingxuan Nie won 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals in Europe and 1 gold in US separately.
Three TTNSW clubs/associations were successful in their applications of the 2021 TTA Equipment and Facilities Grants Program: Forestville Table Tennis Association, Illawarra District Table Tennis Association and Kiama Table Tennis Club.
The above three trend lines show that the game is in reasonable condition because the number of players participating in tournaments in the period 2013 to 2021 has grown year-on-year.
