Sydney 17-Year- Old Table Tennis Player Has 2032 Brisbane Olympics in Her Sights

On 25 February 2021, the International the Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Brisbane was the preferred candidate to host the 2032 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, entering into exclusive discussions with Australian bid organisers to bring the Olympics down under for the third time in Australia after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

Sydney 17-year-old table tennis player Angela Wang said that “I am delighted to hear the news about the Brisbane bid, and hope that I will be reaching my prime by 2032 to compete for medals although I am aiming 2024 Paris Olympic Games and 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games as well.”

 

Leonie Whiteford, the Secretary of Table Tennis NSW (TTNSW) said that “As a rising table tennis star, Angela is one of the best junior female players in New South Wales and in Australia. It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our best junior female table tennis players on homeland after 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Table tennis was first included in Olympic Games in 1988 Seoul Olympics Games.”

Leonie said : “As early as 2016, when she was only 12-year-old, Angela won 5 gold medals in 2016 Australian National Junior Table Tennis Championships including: U13 Girls Team Gold Medal, U13 Girls Singles Gold Medal, U13 Mixed Doubles Gold Medal, U18 Girls Singles Gold Medal and U18 Girls Doubles Gold. She loves table tennis and dreams of competing at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, even 2024 Paris Olympic Games and 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.”

Vice President of TTNSW, Ted Davis said “Angela is a massive talent in table tennis, and TTNSW is definitely cheering Angela on as she achieves her goals. It’s an excellent opportunity for our nation, our next generation and aspiring athletes to keep pursuing their goals and making it to the Olympics.”

Ted said: “TTNSW hopes that Brisbane get the Olympics, and it will be such a thrill for our top junior table tennis players like Angela to aspire to home games.”

Leonie said: “We are looking forward to hearing the good news in July about the final decision on whether Brisbane is successful in bid. Good luck to Brisbane, good luck to Angela, and good luck to all of players.”
