Published Sat 06 Jul 2024
H.E. Mr. Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of China visited Australia during 15 - 18 June 2024 at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Albanese, and held the 9th round of the China-Australia Annual Leaders’ Meeting with Prime Minister Albanese.
This is the first visit to Australia by China’s Premier in the past seven years. It coincides with the 10th anniversary of President Xi Jinping's successful state visit to Australia and the establishment of China-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and is of great significance for the two countries to reflect on past achievements and look into the future.
This visit is rich in content and has profound significance, which will inject new impetus into the development of bilateral relations and cooperation in various fields, and drive the steady and sustainable development of the China-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
TTA Chief Executive Officer Ms. Nicole Adamson and TTNSW Vice President Dr Michael Li successfully promoted TTA, table tennis and the friendships between two countries and two peoples during China’s Premier's visit.
As approved by the Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong Senator, Ms. Nicole Adamson and Dr Michael Li presented seven Ping Pong Rackets signed by the 1971 Australian China Ping Pong Diplomacy Tour Australian Table Tennis Team members of Mr. Noel Shorter and Mr. Paul Pinkewich as the gifts to the Chinese Premier Li Qiang, the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the Chinese Secretary-General of the State Council Wu Zhenglong, the Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiaoqing and the Australian Ambassador to China Scott Dewar on 17 June 2024 at the Parliament House in Canberra.
On 1 May 1971, the Chinese Primer Zhou Enlai met Australian Ping Pong Diplomacy team members at the Chinese Parliament House the Peoples' Great Hall in Beijing.
The 1971 Australia China Ping Pong Diplomacy Tour played one important key role in E.G. Whitlam interviewed the Australian team members in May 1971 several days later after their return from China and decided to visit China on 3 Jul 1971.
On 20 Sept 2023, the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon Penny Wong wrote to Dr Michael Li "The 1971 Ping Pong Diplomacy Tour was an important milestone in the lead up to Australia’s establishment of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1972. I am pleased to hear of your team’s visit to Beijing in late October and planned reunion with counterpart players from the time. We have drawn your visit to the attention of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Australian Embassy in Beijing. I trust this information is of assistance, and best wishes for your future travels."
On 29 Sept 2023, the Australian Olympic Committee Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Matt Carroll AM, wrote to Dr Michael Li "The 1971 Ping Pong Diplomacy Tour was of great historical significance as a vivid manifestation of the desire for friendly exchanges between the people of our two countries and created a good atmosphere for the subsequent official exchanges between China and Australia in 1972."
