The 50th Anniversary of Former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam visiting China
Published Tue 16 May 2023
2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam visiting China.
Dr Geoff Raby AO, the former Australian Ambassador to the People's Republic of China and Prof Jame Curran, the professor of modern history at the University of Sydney met Mr Paul Pinkewich, Mr Noel Shorter and Dr Michael Li of Table Tennis NSW.
Mr Paul Pinkewich and Mr Noel Shorter recalled the enthusiasm and friendship of the Chinese people with personal experience, and expressed their great honour to participate in the historical process of the development of Australia-China diplomatic relations.
Surprisingly, Mr Noel Shorter keeps an invaluable gift from Chinese Premier Zhou Enlia when they visited China in April 1971, and it is one rock from the Great Wall built during 220–206 BC.
It is believed that it is the only rock from the Great Wall given as a souvenir by Chinese Premier Zhou Enlia to any guests from overseas in modern history.
